So what constitutes a micro business? While there are many definitions for the term, the most common are businesses that have between 1-10 employees. They also typically have an annual marketing spend of $500 per year, and need the products and tools to look professional on a small budget. These businesses are Vistaprint’s core customer.

There are roughly 50 million micro businesses with less than 10 employees between North America and Europe. Of those, over 80% don’t actually have paid employees and 90% have one or less full-time employees. And of the companies with less than 10 employees over half have annual revenues of less than $25,000 per year. These are companies like massage therapists or tennis instructors or start-up rock bands, home-based consultants, plumbers and the hundreds and hundreds of other categories of micro businesses that we all rely on every day.
